Welcome to Daily Miracles, a running commentary on the 365 lessons of A Course in Miracles, an influential spiritual text from the 1970s. I am James Leroy Wilson and I invite you to join me as I go through this material for the first time.
LESSON 128
The world I see holds nothing that I want. (ACIM, W-128)
If I think about things I "should" have achieved or acquired, I'm tempted to agree with this lesson but only as an expression of denial. It's easy to say that "the world holds nothing that I want" from a position of disappointment or hopelessness.
But today's lesson isn't a statement of bitterness or resentment. The opposite should be the case. We know the trophy, the promotion, the money, the power, the fame can't bring happiness. There are too many testimonies to the fact.
I love the line "there's been a load of compromisin', on the road to my horizon, but I'm going to be where the light's shining on me" from Glen Campell's hit song "Rhinestone Cowboy." But if the "compromisin'" involves lying, cheating, or stealing, then you won't be at peace when the light does shine on you.
If we love ourselves and others, with the joy and peace that brings, the world we're in will be just fine. If we have all the world offers but have not love, we'll be miserable.
For a long time I've understood this theoretically, but still felt, "Yes, love comes first, but it would also be nice to have x, y, and z." All that does is make me worry about x,y, and z, which doesn't make me feel good.
To love, and to feel good, are choices that must come from within. The world cannot and will not provide for them.
