Lesson 185
I want the peace of God. (ACIM, W-185)
This is tough because we unconsciously condition our desires. I want the peace of God, and I will have peace if [the war ends, my political party wins the next election, my estranged son takes my calls, the money comes in for this month's bills…].
We want peace, but we can't seem to let go of anger or anxiety. We want a satisfactory result in a troubling situation that relieves the tension we feel. Intellectually, we know we ought to have the peace of God regardless of our worldly circumstances. But we don't feel it.
It's a challenge for me as much as anyone (as evidenced by my begging for money above). I let the world disrupt my peace all the time. But then I can always remember that my problems are just temporary products of the imagination. As the introduction to the text of A Course in Miracles says:
Nothing real can be threatened.
Nothing unreal exists.
Herein lies the peace of God.
